Orthodontics is a specialty in the dental medicine which deals with the diagnosing, prevention and treatment of the maxillary dental anomalies, the incorrectly arranged teeth and the irregular correlations of the dental arches and jaws. The incorrectly placed teeth and the connected with the bite problems trouble the oral hygiene, as the gyms inflame and tooth decay develops.
Main medicinal means in orthodontics:
- Splints or removable apparatuses. They are suitable when growing has not yet finished and when all the teeth are not changed.
- Braces: the most universal system applicable in respect of the permanent dentition. We have metal and sapphire braces.

Why do the orthodontic deformations occur?
- Bad habits – the so innocent at first glance sucking of the fingers gradually changes the direction of the normal growing of the facial bones. The incorrect and continued using of baby’s comforter has the similar effect.

When do we have to visit the orthodontist for the first time?

In most cases the appropriate age is after the growing of the first permanent teeth and namely between 6 and 8 years.

How long do the braces have to be worn?

The orthodontic treatment takes a lot of time – between 1,5 and 2,5 years depending on the case. During the treatment the patient has to visit the orthodontist in order the braces to be activated. This shall be done every 4, 6 or 8 weeks.

How can the effect of the braces be preserved?

After the removal of the braces it is obligatory to be put a retainer – fixed or removable.

Does the wearing of braces impose any limitations?

The hard foods and the chewing gums are not recommended during the course of treatment.

When braces cannot be worn?

In case of severe degree of periodontitis, when a lot of teeth are missing, in case of mental disorders and severe forms of allergy.
